Introduction of Thermal Paper

2020-09-27

Thermal paper is also called thermal facsimile paper, thermal recording paper, thermal copying paper, and it is called thermal copying paper in Taiwan. Thermal paper is a kind of processed paper, and its manufacturing principle is to coat a layer of "heat-sensitive paint" (heat-sensitive color change layer) on high-quality base paper. Although the color layers with a dozen chemicals, but at least the following compounds: a leuco dye, a wide variety of the dye, is the most commonly used fluorescent compound; significantly developer about 20% or less, commonly used double Phenol, p-hydroxybenzoic acid; sensitizers account for less than 10%, which contains benzenesulfonic acid amide compounds; fillers account for less than 50%, commonly used calcium carbonate (fine particles); adhesives account for less than 10%, Such as polyvinyl acetate; stabilizers, such as dibenzoyl terephthalate; lubricants, etc. Therefore, the process is difficult and the technical requirements are high.

Used as a communication carrier for text and graphics on fax machines, that is, as fax paper; used as recording materials in medical and measurement systems, such as electrocardiogram drawings, thermal instrument recording paper, etc.; printing paper used in Internet terminals; In terms of commercial activities, thermal paper is used to make trademarks, POS takeaway orders, etc. Common lottery tickets, supermarket receipts, and hospital registered receipts are all thermal paper. Among them, fax paper accounts for the largest proportion.

Thermal paper is a printing paper specially used for thermal printers and thermal fax machines. Its quality directly affects the print quality and storage time, and even affects the service life of printers and fax machines. At present, the thermal paper on the market is uneven, and the country has not issued a national standard. Many users do not know how to identify the quality of thermal paper. This provides convenience for many merchants to manufacture inferior thermal paper, causing losses to users. The storage time becomes shorter, the writing is blurred, and the printer is severely damaged. Thermal printing paper is generally divided into three layers, the bottom layer is a paper base, the second layer is a thermal coating, and the third layer is a protective layer. The thermal coating or protective layer mainly affects its quality.

If the coating of the thermal paper is not uniform, it will cause the printing to be dark in some places and light in some places, and the print quality will be significantly reduced. If the chemical formula of the thermal coating is unreasonable, the storage time of the printing paper will change. Very short, good printing paper can be stored for 5 years after printing (under normal temperature and avoiding direct sunlight), and now there is a long-lasting thermal paper that can be stored for 10 years, but if the formula of the thermal coating is unreasonable It may only be stored for a few months.

The protective coating is also critical to the storage time after printing. It can absorb a part of the light that causes the chemical reaction of the thermal coating, slow down the deterioration of the printing paper, and protect the thermal element of the printer from damage, but if the protective coating The uneven layer will not only greatly reduce the protection of the thermal coating, but even the fine particles of the protective coating will fall off during the printing process, rubbing the thermal original of the printer, resulting in damage to the thermal printing element.

How to identify the quality of thermal paper

1. Appearance : If the paper is very white, it means that the protective coating and thermal coating of the paper are unreasonable, and too much phosphor is added. The better paper should be slightly green. The paper is not smooth or looks uneven, indicating that the paper coating is not uniform. If the paper seems to reflect very strong light, too much phosphor is added, and the quality is not good.

2. Fire roasting : The method of roasting with fire is also very simple. Use a lighter to heat the back of the paper. If the color that appears on the paper is brown after heating, it means that the heat-sensitive formula is not reasonable and the storage time may be relatively short. The black part of the paper has small streaks or uneven color blocks, indicating that the coating is uneven. The paper of better quality should be black and green (with a little green) after heating, and the color block should be uniform, and the color gradually fades from the center to the surroundings.

3. Sunlight contrast identification: smear the printed paper with a highlighter and put it in the sun (this can accelerate the reaction of the thermal coating to light), which paper will turn black fastest, indicating that the longer it can be stored short.
